FAIRFAX, Va. – Virginia voters heading to the polls in November will need to produce identification to vote, in accordance with a new state law.
There’s been some worry that people without driver’s licenses or government identification will have trouble at the polls, but new state-issued voter identification cards should show up in mailboxes by the beginning of October.
Fairfax County Registrar of Voters Cameron Quinn says voters who don’t get their cards should call.
“It could have been an error, maybe something happened in the postal service and it didn’t get there or maybe they are in fact not registered,” Quinn said.
Voters will need to show either their voter identification cards or another form of valid identification at the polls, in order to vote. Those who don’t have cards or IDs at the polls will be required to vote by provisional ballot and have until noon the following Friday to show identification to have their votes counted.
Here is a list of what can be used for valid identification in Virginia:
- Virginia voter registration card
- Valid Virginia driver’s license
- Military ID
- Any federal, Virginia state or local government-issued ID
- Employer-issued photo identification card
- Concealed handgun permit
- Valid student identification issued by any institution of higher education located in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Current utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck indicating the name and address of the voter
Virginia’s registration deadline is Oct. 15, and voters can visit Metro D.C. Voter to check their voter status. The site is a new one stop place for the entire region to check registration. Voters simply click on their region to begin.
